Dave Batters

On July 1, Palliser MP Dave Batters was admitted to hospital for undisclosed reasons (Regina Leader-Post, July 9/08). No one really found out anything until July 9, when the story was published. Even Andrew Scheer, when interviewed, was unaware Dave was having a problem.

Everything's been very hush-hush, which smacks of a cover-up. Even Dave's press release is vague, suggesting this is something serious. Normally, thought would run toward cancer, or an equally serious health problem. But this time, the rumours are a little different.

Word on the street is, Dave tried to commit suicide.

I've known quite a few people who struggled with depression and suicide. It's wrongly stigmatized, and it can be a difficult place for anyone. I'm not at all interested in giving Dave a hard time over this. I think the people in his riding derserve to know what's taking place, and, when the time is right, I hope Dave can find the wherewithall to tell them. More importantly, if this is true, I hope Dave can rely on his friends and family to help him through this. It can be a difficult struggle, but he doesn't have to do it alone.

No one wants you to suffer, Dave. Good luck, I hope it all works out for you.

Rumours are just rumours of course. In Moose Jaw right now the council of the day is facing legal action after having rammed through a $61 million deal and tax increase which could see several strong-armed bullies profit personally from the sale of land owned in the area of the proposed multiplex hockey arena and curling rink.

Batters said the feds would contribute an amount equal to the Province for the construction. After the deal was done Batters told them they need to reapply for the money because the project changed significantly from their application 1 year ago. Having broke the law and now facing a court date the City is beginning to ignore all requests on the matter.

Rumour has it that Batters may have been confronted by these bullies, as have many local businessmen. Threats, nasty late night phone calls, ostracizing, these businessmen are using all the old school yard bully tactics to keep from losing their shirts. Is it possible Batters got in the way?

Sounds like Ray Boughen is still mayor in Moose Jaw. They will learn one day to listen to the people!

Our thought are with you Dave and hope everything goes good!

I know staff at the General Hospital in Regina that treated Batters. He apparently attempted suicide over an affair. Instead of slitting his throat he made several puncture wounds.

I’ve heard that the real reason Dave stepped down is that he’s impregnated his mistress — and this came from a Conservative Party insider, who, needless to say, didn’t want to be named. If this is the real reason, voters need to know. Seems to corroborate the story from the General Hospital. How come this isn't in the news??

I too have heard this is the case. I do not wish mental health problems on anyone, but the pressure of the moral right to uphold the values they preach to the public was too big a strain on the individual. I am surprised this wasnt a bigger public issue as we head into another public election as the concervatives are again publically preaching the “moral highroad” and privately living the moral “back road”.

The comments posted on this site are outragously hurting. How can some people comment on such horrible things from impregating his mistress to having an affair & who is the staff at the General hospital revealing confidental information? What a cruel, cruel, world we live in Master Jack!!! One day something will happen you one of you or a family member. I hope you remember your postings to this site. God bless you!

Grow up. Conservative Batters was part of the holier than thou right opposing same sex marriage and upholding all kinds of morally righteous behaviour while not following it in his own life. How typical. Frankly, I always thought the man seemed gay himself, or at the very least bi-sexual. Now his wife is a very public person in Senate. Seems we're not done with these Batters which is too bad.
